The city of Wilmington was founded in 1870 and just twenty years later, the first banks opened their doors in town. Wilmington Savings Bank has been a foundational part of the growth of the Wilmington community over the past 125 years. Our secret to success: the people and community we serve.
It all began in the late 1800’s when two savings associations were formed in Clinton County. They were called The Wilmington Homestead Company, incorporated in May 1886, and Union Loan and Savings Company, incorporated in January of 1890. The savings associations proceeded to engage in a friendly rivalry, both with the honest purpose of helping the people of Clinton County save regularly and making funds available for them to invest in homes and other constructions.The two associations remained in friendly competition until July 1, 1971, when the board members of both savings associations decided to join hands, becoming The Wilmington Savings Association. At the time of the union, the savings association was located at 31 S. South St.
By late 1976, construction on a new office building began at 184 N. South St, where the bank still resides today. On June 27, 1977, the building officially opened its doors for business! The new location added customer parking, a drive-through window and safety deposit boxes, expanding customer service. Soon after, The Wilmington Savings Association adopted a new name, The Wilmington Savings Bank.Here at Wilmington Savings Bank, we’ve seen the banking industry evolve and grow over the last 125 years. We continue to be a strong pillar to the finances in our local communities. We are still personally invested in the dreams and success of the customers we serve, just as we were when our adventure began in the late 1800’s.
